Manhole covers and seals are the access points to chemical and pharmaceutical tanks — and the place where a poor seal becomes a safety and compliance problem. PTFE manhole covers and seals provide corrosion-proof, leak-free access that protects both the process and the people around it. This guide covers design, sizing, inspection and safety.
Why PTFE for manhole seals?
Tanks holding acids, solvents or pharmaceutical batches need a sealing surface that won’t corrode, contaminate or degrade. PTFE is inert to almost all chemicals, holds up across temperature and pressure cycles, and is FDA-compliant for product-contact surfaces — making it ideal for manhole sealing.
Design and sizing considerations
- Match the seal profile and diameter to the manhole flange and bolt pattern.
- Account for operating pressure and temperature when selecting thickness and grade.
- Allow for even bolt loading to avoid localised over-compression of the PTFE.
- Consider a filled grade where sustained clamping load could cause cold flow.
Inspection and safety
Inspect sealing faces for scoring or chemical attack at each shutdown, and re-torque bolts after the first thermal cycle, as PTFE can relax slightly under load. A disciplined inspection routine prevents the slow leaks that lead to emissions, product loss and operator exposure.
